The Pewter Factory - What is Pewter?

What is Pewter?

Pewter is a metal alloy composed primarily of Tin. It has been used to make jewellery & tableware since ancient times, with the earliest known example found in an Egyptian tomb, thought to be from 1450 BC. It was also used by the Romans & it became popular in Europe from the middle ages onwards.

The Tin content of Pewter is usually 85-99%, often along with small quantities of Copper, Antimony & Bismuth for hardening. In the past it was also sometimes combined with Silver or Lead. An alloy with Lead is now rarely used due to modern understanding of it's toxicity & current jewellery material regulations.

Our Pewter Jewellery is made exclusively from Fine Pewter, a Lead free Pewter with a high Tin content (more than 90%). It is carefully made to comply with all known jewellery material regulations worldwide.
